The Unconventional Teacher
The kind of teacher I (we) wanted:
1.) Doesn't mind if I sleep during classes and understand why I'm sleepy
2.) Doesn't give much importance to attendance
3.) Doesn't psychologically terrorize me when I fail to pass my projects and fail my quizzes
4.) Doesn't mind if I will be eating my breakfast, lunch, snacks & dinner during classes
5.) Doesn't mind what I wear or if I'm neat enough to be called a "student"
6.) Doesn't require me students memorize the lessons, but require me to understand it
7.)Doesn't yell at me and my classmates' face when we are being noisy
8.) Doesn't mind of his/her class cracks jokes every now and then during classes
9.)Doesn't require you to do things (reports, projects & activities) that you don't enjoy and want to do
10.) Doesn't mind if you leave the class even it isn't time to go yet (allows cutting-classes)
11.) She/he is considerate to all excuses for the absences and tardiness
12.) She/he is thinking fair all the time
13.) She/he is open-minded and not judgmental
14.) She/he is not bookish
15.) She/he is using other methods of learning
16.) She/he listens to all the ideas, simple and sometimes nonsense thoughts of her/his students
17.) She/he knows how to deal with her students without being too lenient and too strict
18.) She/he teach her/his students to spill out their ideas & thoughts in any way possible
19.) She/he will break some strict school policies for her/his students' sake
20.) She/he will find ways for her/his students to learn more than the book and the school offers
The list is still long but, these are the top 20 characteristics of the teacher I wanted to have and wanted to be. These is my bucket list as a teacher. I wanted to be an unconventional teacher that would leave an unforgettable lesson in my students' college days.
Unfortunately, I just achieved few of the things I listed and I think I have limited time for this because I think my career as a teacher is still uncertain.
I always come to class unprepared because I don't have lesson plans or course outlines. I base my daily discussions on what my class wanted to hear or discuss. I don't have definite reference books and textbooks because I don't like being bookish. Sometimes I come to class sleepy (yes, just like the tardy students).
I hope these frustrations will soon be solved.
I hope these bucket list will soon be achieved.
